The Defector’s Weld

For an evening that doesn’t involve trekking into central London, The Defector’s Weld is our first recommendation. It’s a proper neighbourhood pub with a genuinely good drinks list and a kitchen that takes food seriously — the kind of place locals actually use, rather than a bar built for passing tourist trade. The atmosphere shifts nicely through the evening: relaxed and easy for an early dinner, livelier later on as the crowd fills in. There’s a decent wine list alongside well-kept beer, and the food menu holds up on its own if you’d rather make a night of it there than head out elsewhere first. It’s a genuinely short walk from either of our apartments — five minutes at most along Uxbridge Road — which makes it an easy choice on a night when you don’t want a big journey home afterwards. That’s honestly one of the best things about staying in Shepherd’s Bush: proper nights out don’t require a taxi. Weeknights are quieter and better for conversation; weekends pick up considerably, so book ahead if you want a table for food.
