Wormwood Scrubs

Most visitors never make it to Wormwood Scrubs, which is exactly why it’s worth knowing about. It’s one of London’s largest areas of unbroken open grassland — around 200 acres, sitting just north of Shepherd’s Bush — and a genuinely good spot if you want space rather than a manicured park. It’s less “garden,” more “proper common”: football pitches, wildflower meadows, skylarks overhead in summer, and enough open sky that it feels like a real break from the city, despite being a short walk from the tube. Runners and dog walkers use it daily, and on a clear morning it’s a good way to start the day before the rest of London wakes up. It’s a straightforward walk or short bus ride from Cogan’s Place, and pairs well with a visit to Wood Lane or Television Centre if you’re making a morning of it. Go early for the quietest, most atmospheric visit — by mid-afternoon on a sunny weekend, local footballers and picnickers claim most of the space. It’s not polished, and that’s rather the point — a genuine slice of London life most guests never see.
